Mozzies, Sunsets and Ω-limit Sets
Update: and the survey says... Hello Bert!
Also, for anyone who thought I just took a photo of a regular mozzie, and scaled it up in photoshop, here's one I nailed (with an elephant gun) next to my mobile:

Also, no thanks to the internet, I solved the quiz problem. Turns out my boss was right, but for the wrong reasons. And I was wrong, but right about the reasons why his reasons were wrong. But there are other reasons, which as far as I can tell so far are right. Updated paper.
Nine months ago, on the night of my farewell party, young JennyLuise gave me a gift. A gift which confused me. She gave me a can of insect repellant. And several mugfulls of vodka. The second part confused me in the short term, especially the parts of me that usually keep me in a vertical standing position. The first part confused me on a more intellectual level, and for a longer period of time.
But, with the coming of the Swedish summer, my confusion has vanished, or rather, it's been stomped into oblivion by Jurassic-Park-esque sensations of terror. The mozzies here are freakin huge.
I caught this little bastard trying to sneak into my room the other night:

To give you a sense of scale, it was roughly the size of a dinner plate. Okay, not really, but it was bigger than a 50 cent coin. Significantly bigger. They look like those big daddy-long-legs spiders, except they fly around and bite you.
Secondly, as the title of this post promises, or at least implies, here's a picture of a sunset from last night:

I took that at about 20 minutes after midnight. Yes, we've passed the summer solstice, and the sun is again setting. It still doesn't get dark, but the sun dips down and does a sorta sunset/sunrise dance medly before heaving itself back up again and shining down on us for another 22 odd hours. I think it must have signed one of Howard's AWA's (as a blog writer, I feel that I ought to have at least some poorly-thought-out and unimaginative left-wing vitriol on here).
Lastly, a quiz to keep you on your toes: is the statement of the theorem in this (draft) paper still true if the integrand of the persistence of excitation condition is squared? My boss thinks so, but I'm not sure. (Mat - this is an example of parameter estimation with a nonlinear model.)
In actual news: 4 days until I go to Spain!!

Why is only Mat referred to directly in your mathematical quiz? I am sure we are all more than capable of excitation.
Persistent excitation even.
The quiz is for all and sundry!
The note to Mat is an aside, a reference to a previous discussion.
Far be it from me to doubt how persitently excitable any of my readers are!
I'm laissez-faire.
Spain huh? Where is you going in Spain?
On this mission I'm primarily targeting the northern and north-central regions. Madrid, San Seb, San Fermin, Barcelona, and the spaces in between them.
Main objective being sunshine during the day, and cheap beers during the night, and hanging out with some old aussie friends.
and paella! paella is your friend!
oh, guess who will be saying 'hello bert'to the man himself very, very soon?!?
there may even be some survey action going on.....
Hey I-rock,
Can you please check out Santander too? I am gonna be living there in 2007.
Alex, whilst I'm proud that you think (know?) I would spontaneously quote Family Feud for no reason at all, I had actually heard the news before writing that...
My immediate feelings were, well, I don't how to type the opposite of "bu bow!", but I know I felt it.
Lil Bro: No problemo, muchacho. If I find it I will studiously record everything of interest about the place.
p.s. that's exciting!
Everyone I know is either going on big world adventures, or getting married. Seems like a kind of oil and water effect...
what about me?!? i'm not doing either of those things!
Or... having babies!! Babies abound right now. I think that they are sediment to the oil and water analogy.
As for Spain - sounds good, though I wouldn't bank on finding too much inbetween the places you have mentioned. I would suggest, however, to head left (when facing the sea) along the coast from San Seb for a coupla hundred kms. It gets perty!!
alex - yes but Steve is doing both, which I think means that to maintain cosmic karmic balance you owe him a back rub.
mo'tangles - mm, yes, nice addition to the analogy, and thanks for the spain tip!
One advantage of having almost zero accomodation booked and planning to sleep under park benches is that I'm quite free to change tack at the drop of a hat!
And hats will drop. Oh yes, mark my words, hats will drop!
