Hello, rest of the world?

In case you missed it via other interweb media:

Yes, this blog is undergoing a temporary period of quietude, a travel blog without the travel. That will change soon enough.

Lately, I've been very very busy with work. But, living as I do in Party Central, I've found the odd moment to unwind noisily.

On Friday, I went to a strange party in a house in the woods, owned by a young man from southern USA who lives there making guitars. I found out about it through an Ecuadorian classical guitarist friend. Cool party. There was a girl there who looked exactly like Uma Thurman from Pulp Fiction, except with platinum-blonde hair rather than jet-black. There was another girl with a polaroid camera, how retro! It was massive. Seriously, they look huge now. Everyone got very drunk and danced salsa until 4:30 am. Good clean fun.

Last night I went to an even more bizarre party. I arrived at about 11pm, and there was a fashion show going on in the middle of the dance floor, sponsored by one of the trendy clothing stores downtown, hot swedish girls dancing in the new spring range - which turns out to mostly consist of pants that make girls look a bit mannish, in a bad way - and guys breakdancing quite impressively, photographers and all.. then they packed that up, and it was normal clubby dance music for about 20 mins, then a band came on stage and played pub rock style songs for a bout 30 mins, then it was back to dance music for another 30 mins or so, then another band came on and played heavy metal music, then it was back to dance for the rest of the night. Quite disorienting!

On ANZAC Day, I had a bbq out in a park with 2 Aussie girls, and about 25-30 people of various other nationalities who joined our solemn festivities and festive solemnity. One of the girls baked ANZAC biccies, which were a hit. Lots of casual racism directed at Turks, as is the tradition on ANZAC Day, but we barbecued kebabs as a good-will gesture.

Last weekend was another event in the farewell season, with a trip to Scharinska to see off Amanda, who's heading back to Canada, via France, Italy, and and visit to the loveable crazies in Belgium.

Another video doing the rounds in UmeƄ town, a Swedish dance instructional video, the lessons of which my crew here have been studying and practicing (and practising) rather intensely of late:
